Why Awana?
By Kristi Palmer
I have been privileged to experience Awana from many different angles: first as a clubber, then as a group leader, and finally as a club director. I have seen firsthand the way this program supports kids as they learn about God’s Word, study it, memorize it, and apply it. We have seen many children move through the program, from the 2-year-old class, affectionately called Puggles, to the upper elementary class called Truth & Training. But why is a program like this so important?
Studying and knowing God’s Word is one of the most meaningful ways to know God, to learn how to live for Him, and to impact others for His kingdom. Let’s look at some of the biggest reasons why a structured approach to Bible knowledge is important.
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3 KJV)
To honor God, we first need to know Him. The Bible is God’s primary way of revealing His will and His nature to us. As our clubbers memorize Scripture, they are learning about God and His character, which is the foundation of a life lived in service to Him.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV)
Studying God’s Word allows our clubbers to grow spiritually and be transformed. As they memorize verses, the truths they recite guide them along a path that leads to Christlikeness. With practice over time, they are learning to discern God’s will for their lives based on the truths of His Word.
“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)
Knowing God’s Word will one day allow these kids to teach and encourage others. What a privilege it is to be raised up in the knowledge of Christ and to have years of Bible knowledge ready to be shared at a moment’s notice! We are raising up the next generation of Eastland Baptist Church, and if we are purposeful in guiding them to know and follow the Lord, just think of the impact they can have in the years to come!
I hope you will join me in praying for our Awana clubbers and volunteers as we begin a new year. May it be a year full of love and the light of God’s truth. May our leaders serve with wisdom, patience, and joy. And may our children grow in wisdom as they hide God’s Word in their hearts!
